Quarantine has, in a way, made me get back in touch with some things. In Japanese culture a place for immersive learning, and in western culture a sparring area when competing in martial arts. A Dojo is a miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves - our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. It is an area of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an enemy, but rather a person engaged in helping us understand more about ourselves.

It is a place where we can learn a great deal in a short time, about who we are and how we react to the world. The conflict that takes place inside the Dojo helps us handle the conflicts that take place outside. The concentration and discipline required to stay fit carries on into daily life. The activity in the Dojo calls on us to constantly attempt new things, so it is a source of learning - in Zen terminology - a source of enlightenment.

At his death he is hard and stiff. Green plants are tender and filled with sap. At their death they are withered and dry. Therefore the stiff and unbending is the disciple of life. Thus an army without flexibility never wins a battle. A tree that is unbending is easily broken. The hard and the strong will fall. The soft and weak will overcome. Link is in my profile. Whatever you call the space in which you train It is a place of constant learning and self-enlightenment. Not in the future or the past. Zen teaches that life must be seized at the moment. By living in the present you are in full contact with yourself and your environment, your energy is not dissipated and is always available. In the present, there are no regrets as there are in the past. By thinking of the future, you dilute the present. The time to live is now. As long as what you are doing at the moment is exactly what you are doing at that moment and nothing else you are at one with yourself and what you are doing, and that is Zen.

While doing something, you are doing it at the fullest. One simply cannot read this book enough times. Finally all finished. My happy place! It's about self control. Body discipline. Though the role of Zen in historical Japanese fighting arts is greatly overstated, it was a big influence on martial artists worldwide in the 20th century. She works incredibly hard! I love the spirituality of zen ,in general, and how you can infuse it into your daily practice to enrich your life and sharpen the sword of your mind. A beautiful book. Rich in insight. I've been training Wing Chun Kung Fu for just over a year now, and casually studying Zen, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophy on and off for about five.

I still have my fair share of problems, and I could always strive to be a better person, but I at least feel like I have access to all the tools I might need for any given situation should I choose to remember that they are there. Ten years ago today, my longtime private student Joe Hyams passed away. His picture hangs on the wall of my school and his passion for the martial arts resides here as well.

You can learn to accept these moods. What is bad, however, is letting them dictate your nature. When you unleash your aggression or hostility on another person, it inspires aggression and hostility in return.

The result then is conflict, which all true martial artists try to avoid. Anger doesn't demand action. When you act in anger you lose self control. How can you expect to control someone else if you cannot control yourself? Think about that as an essential quality of martial arts. Beginners welcome!
